Zeekr — Geely's premium electric brand

Zeekr cannot be explained without its parent. Geely, based in Hangzhou, is the group that acquired Volvo Cars, holds Lotus, created Polestar with Volvo, and holds a stake in Mercedes-Benz’s parent. Its European engineering relationships are older and deeper than any other Chinese group’s, and its platforms are developed with European safety and handling expectations in the room from the beginning.

Zeekr was created as the premium electric brand within that structure, sharing architecture with Volvo and Polestar products. In Europe it entered through the Netherlands and Sweden, which is a revealing choice: those are the markets where the group’s engineering credibility is already established.

Where the cars come from

The shared-platform position gives Zeekr something most Chinese entrants lack — vehicles engineered from the outset for the loads, speeds and crash requirements of European roads, rather than adapted to them afterwards. It also means the products sit close to Volvo and Polestar models in the market, which is a positioning problem inside the group as much as an advantage outside it.

Corporate structure within the group has been reorganised more than once, including changes to how Zeekr is held and listed. For a buyer the structure matters only where it affects who honours the warranty in a given country, which is a question about the local importer rather than about a holding company.

What this means when buying

The technical case is strong: high-voltage architecture on the newer models, charging performance among the best available in Europe, and interiors that compete on material quality rather than only on screen size — an unusual emphasis in this group of brands.

The case against is coverage. Zeekr sells in a small number of European countries and the network is correspondingly thin, so the ownership experience depends heavily on how far you live from a service point. As with every brand here, that is a market fact with a date, not a property of the car.
