EREV — range extender

An extended-range electric vehicle drives its wheels with electric motors only; the combustion engine on board is a generator that charges the battery and never drives the wheels directly.

Mechanically this is an electric car with a generator attached. There is no mechanical path from engine to wheels, so there is no conventional gearbox and no engine-driven axle. The engine runs at whatever speed suits it best, or does not run at all.

Why it matters when buying

The driving experience is that of an electric car in every condition, which is not true of a plug-in hybrid, where the engine takes over and the character changes. The compromise sits elsewhere: carrying an engine that never drives the wheels is dead weight when the battery is charged, and on a long motorway run a generator is a less efficient way to use fuel than a good engine driving the wheels directly.

The category is far more developed in China than in Europe, where charging infrastructure and driving distances made it attractive earlier, and several Chinese manufacturers have brought it to Europe as a bridge product for buyers not ready for a pure electric car.

Regulatory treatment is the awkward part. Some national incentive and access schemes treat these cars as electric, others as hybrids, and the difference can be large. It is a market-level fact with a date on it, not a European constant.
