SOH — what it means
State of health is the remaining usable capacity of a battery expressed as a share of its original capacity.
A pack that has lost part of its original capacity still works normally; it simply stores less. Manufacturers set a warranty floor below which they replace or repair the pack, and that floor is the number worth reading in the warranty document rather than the headline year count.
Why it matters when buying
On a used car, the reading is the single most informative figure available and it is not visible in a listing. Most Chinese models expose it through the service menu or the manufacturer app, and a dealer who refuses to show it is telling you something. Degradation is fastest in the first period of a car’s life and then flattens, so a low reading on a nearly new car is a worse sign than the same reading on an older one.
