Xiaomi — the phone company that built a credible car

Xiaomi is a consumer electronics company, best known outside China for phones and household devices, and it announced its move into vehicles as a corporate commitment of a scale that invited scepticism. The scepticism did not survive the product. Its first car, a large electric saloon, was received domestically as a genuinely competitive vehicle rather than a technology demonstration, and demand exceeded what the company could build.

Why a phone company can do this

Two reasons, and both are structural rather than lucky.

The first is that an electric car is closer to a consumer electronics product than a combustion car ever was. The hardest parts of the old industry — engines, transmissions, calibration accumulated over decades — do not exist. Batteries, motors and power electronics can be bought from a mature Chinese supply base, and Xiaomi did buy them.

The second is that Xiaomi already had what the incumbents lack: an ecosystem of devices, an operating system users already live inside, and a retail network with foot traffic. The car became another screen in a system customers were already committed to, which is a distribution advantage no traditional manufacturer can construct.

Europe

At the time of writing Xiaomi does not sell cars in Europe. The company has signalled intent to enter, and the practical obstacles are the ones every entrant faces: type approval, a service network, parts logistics and the cybersecurity and update management certification that European approval requires.

Cars have nonetheless appeared in Europe through unofficial channels, and they are the clearest possible illustration of what a parallel import means: a domestic Chinese charging socket rather than CCS2, connectivity not provisioned for European networks, no European approval and no European entity owing the owner anything.

This page exists so that when the badge does arrive properly, the difference between the two situations is already clear.
